Professor Yasumasa Bessho Appointed NAIST Indonesia Office Director(2022/4/20)

Professor Yasumasa Bessho (Gene Regulation Research Laboratory, Division of Biological Science) has been appointed the second Director of the NAIST Indonesia Office, succeeding the first office Director, Professor Emeritus Masashi Kawaichi (currently Director of Division for Global Education), who served 6 years as Director since the office’s establishment in April 2016.

President Kazuhiro Shiozaki issued Prof. Bessho an official letter of appointment on April 20 and expressed his expectations saying, “Prof. Bessho is the only person who can take over the NAIST network in Indonesia that Prof. Kawaichi has built over the years. ” In response, Prof. Bessho expressed his aspirations as Director saying, “I hope to introduce our new faculty members to Indonesian partner institutions and disseminate information about NAIST’s new research fields through NAIST’s network in Indonesia. I would also like to address issues such as strengthening our relationships with Indonesian government agencies.”

The COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia has stabilized and restrictions concerning foreigners’ entry have been relaxed. The Indonesian NAIST Alumni Association (INAA) is planning to hold a reunion meeting onsite for the first time in three years in mid-August this year, which is expected to kick-off and revitalize face-to-face interactions between NAIST faculty & staff and representatives of partner institutions and NAIST alumni in Indonesia.

NAIST Indonesia Office 6th Anniversary Symposium & INAA Alumni Reunion 2021

NAIST established its first Overseas Education Collaborative Office in Bogor, an economic and culturally significant city in the West Java province, Indonesia in April 2016.The NAIST Indonesia Office is operated in cooperation with the Indonesian NAIST Alumni Association (INAA). As a hub for enhancing NAIST’s presence in ASEAN countries, it plays essential roles in activities including academic exchange with partner institutions and NAIST alumni, and active recruitment of talented students. To commemorate its 6th Anniversary, we will hold an online symposium together with an INAA Alumni Reunion on August 7.

Indonesian NAIST Alumni Association (INAA) will be held Online Reunion in August 7th 2021. This event will be sponsored by INAA and NAIST and attended by several invited speakers such as President of NAIST, Director of NAIST Indonesia Office (Prof. Masashi Kawaichi, MD, PhD), President of INAA (Dr. Berry Juliandi, SSi, MSi), Vice President of INAA (Dr Zainal Arief, ST, MT), INAA members, NAIST Members, and NAIST students from the Division of information science (IS), biological science (BS), and material science (MS).

We hope this event will serve as an opportunity to expand academic exchanges between NAIST and partner institutions and strengthen alumni ties. Please join us for this event!

 

Dr Berry Juliandi, SSi, MSi, NAIST Alumni was elected as Dean of the Faculty of Math and Natural Sciences, IPB-University

BOGOR- One of the alumni from NAIST (INAA member) on Thursday, January 28, 2021 was elected as Dean of the Faculty of Math and Natural Sciences, IPB-University. Berry Sensei got a record as the youngest Dean at IPB-University for the last 20 years. He was elected as Dean after going through a long and rigorous selection process. Berry Sensei also received the highest votes at both the Department and Faculty levels at IPB. The IPB Academic Senate (IPB professor community) decided that Berry Sensei deserves to be elected as Dean of FMIPA IPB for the period 2021-2025. Congratulations on the new duty, Berry Sensei!

 

 

 

NAIST Indonesia Office Director delivered online lecture for biotechnology students of Universitas Gadjah Mada(2020/10/24-linked to DGE activities of NAIST)

On October 24, 2020, Professor Masashi Kawaichi, the Director of the NAIST Indonesia Office, delivered an online lecture titled “My career as a scientist” for biotechnology students of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), one of the NAIST’s Indonesian partner institutions. This event was organized by the UGM Center for Biotechnology Research.

NAIST Professor was invited to Indonesia for conference and collaboration work

JAKARTA-Prof. Masashi Kawaichi, a head of NAIST Division of Educational Development, fulfilled the invitation from UI to participate in the 4th International Conference on Global Health (ICGH 2019) as a plenary speaker. The conference was held in Borobudur Hotel in September 26-28, Jakarta. He delivered his speech in the second day of the conference before leaving for UPN Veteran Jakarta for other agenda.

In UPN Veteran Jakarta, Prof. Kawaichi is welcomed by our alumni and the president of the university. In his first visit to this institution, Prof. Kawaichi was requested to talk about his research as well as introducing NAIST programs. The seminar was attended by hundreds of participants including university staffs and students. The general goal for this visit is to seek collaborative work that can be made by both institutions in the future.

NAIST staffs visited IPB and UI to enhance collaboration works

Prof. Shun Hirota from Material Science and Asoc. Prof. Takayuki Tohge from Biological Science arrived at Soekarno-Hatta international airport in early morning, September 10, 2019. They went directly to Bogor accompanied by NAIST Indonesia staff. Upon arrival to Bogor, they went to visit NAIST Indonesia office before delivering presentation in the Faculty of Mathematic and Natural Science (FMIPA) IPB. Prof. Shun was invited to the FMIPA meeting room as a guest lecturer presenting “Protein assembly and supra-molecules generation” topic. He welcomed by the dean, vice dean, faculty members, and our alumni. The event is attended by many students mostly came from biology and biochemistry department. The presentation was interactive and closed with introduction of NAIST programs and scholarship information. Asoc. Prof. Tohge came with different agenda, he scheduled to have personal meeting with Dr. Irmanida from department of chemistry IPB to starting collaboration work in coffee research.

In the next day, Prof. Shun left Bogor and heading to Jakarta to give presentation in Indonesian Medical Education and Research Institute (IMERI) UI. He welcomed by our alumni worked for faculty of medicine UI. Prof. Shun delivered his presentation to attendees which mostly researchers, students, and medical doctors working in the IMERI vicinity. The UI visit was closed with laboratory tour in the several sections of IMERI.

Meanwhile in the same day, Asoc. Prof. Tohge stayed in Bogor and invited to department of biology IPB as a guest lecturer. He had a fruitful discussion during lecture session. He then visited research facility in FMIPA to gain idea about his future collaboration work.

 

 

NAIST Professors visited Yogyakarta for BioMIC 2019

The second International Conference on Bioinformatics, Biotechnology, and Biomedical Engineering (BioMIC) 2019 was successfully held by UGM on September 12-13, 2019 in Eastparc Hotel, Yogyakarta. The event is a part of the university annual scientific conferences series (UASC 2019) and designed as a platform for global researchers to discuss their latest finding of research and technological development in the fields of bioinformatics, biotechnology and biomedical engineering. Hundreds of participants joined the conferences this year including our professors from Material Science and Biological Science Division.

Prof. Shun Hirota from NAIST Material Sciences came to the conference as an invited speaker and delivered interesting research topic “Constructing Heme Protein Supramolecules by 3D Domain Swapping” in the second plenary session. A day before, he also invited as a guest lecturer in the Faculty of Mathematic and Natural Sciences and Faculty of Pharmacy UGM. During the lecture he introduced NAIST programs and admission processes to all participants, especially those who interested to study in Material Science.

Another NAIST staff, Asoc. Prof. Takayuki Tohge from Biological Science also participated in BioMIC 2019. He delivered his presentation of “Metabolomics-assisted Functional Genomics of Plant Phenolic Secondary Metabolism” in the first day of the conference. He also invited as a guest lecturer in Faculty of Biology UGM and had a chance to introduce NAIST to all interested participants. He has a good impression during his first-time visiting Yogyakarta. Both Prof. Shun and Asoc. Prof. Tohge are warm-welcomed and well-treated by our alumni during their visit in Yogyakarta.

NAIST appeared in the first SEAPPRO 2019

BOGOR- In August 14, 2019, NAIST attended Southeast Asian Plant Protection Conference (SEAPPRO) 2019. This event was firstly held this year initiated by department of Plant Protection, IPB, partnering with UPM and ISAAS. Our alumni, Dr. Giyanto was appointed as a chairperson of this big conference.

NAIST opened a booth in this event together with several education institution and profit companies. We welcomed participants who want to know more about NAIST. Our staff circulated NAIST guide books while explaining NAIST study programs to interested attendees. This effort is dedicated to introduce and spread essential information about NAIST to a global academia, especially Indonesian.

NAIST Participated in The 3rd International Conference on Biosciences (The 3rd ICoBio) 2019

BOGOR-The 3rd International Conference on Bioscience was held in August 8, 2019 at IPB International Convention Centre (IPBICC), Bogor, Indonesia. The ICoBio is biennial conference event organized by Department of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, IPB University. The ICoBio was successfully held for the first time, back in August 2015. Participants from all over Indonesia and other countries were gathered in this event to communicate their research finding in biological science in a very fruitful scientific meeting atmosphere.

In this opportunity, NAIST Indonesia office opened a promotion booth offering information about NAIST study programs. Many students, researchers, and lectures visited our booth to know more about NAIST. Staff of NAIST Indonesia office distributed booklets and laboratory guides for interested visitors. This is first time for NAIST Indonesia office to participate in such event, thank to our alumni from Department of Biology of IPB University, for supporting us in joining the 3rd ICoBio event.
